Its anti-cancer mechanism is similar to the anthracycline: it interacts with the adenine-thymine base, thereby preventing DNA as a template for DNA replication and RNA synthesis. Some other effects, such as interfering with the conformation of the cell membrane protein, may also be related to its antitumor activity, known to be intervening between base pairs to interfere with DNA synthesis. Data suggest that there is a special interaction between amsacrine and epinephrine and thymosin bases. Amsacrine has no cytotoxic effect on the thiol group, but it may interact with the protein thiol group in the form of protein-S-acridine adduct to produce cytotoxic effects.
